Tahajjud... oh how hard!!!!
Assalamualaikum wrb..
I was moved to write this article after my friend had told me how it is hard for her to wake up for tahajud.
Actually, the first thing is, yes, it is NOT EASY and I myself can't still be consistent with it everyday.
Because for me, being able to wake up for tahajud is a gift from Allah to HIs servant who is really, really wish to meet Him.
What is the goodness of tahajjud?
There are a lot, from Al Quran and the hadith of our beloved prophet pbuh. (saw)

Allah Most High said, Establish worship at the going down of the sun until the dark of the night, and (the recital of) the Quran at dawn. Lo! (the recital of) the Quran at dawn is ever witnessed. And some part of the night awake for its recital, as voluntary worship for you. It may be that your Lord will raise you to a praised estate. [Quran, 17: 78-79]
Abu Hurayra (Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him, his family, and companions) said, The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer.[Muslim]
Abu Hurayra (Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him, his family, and companions) was asked, What prayer is most virtuous, after the obligatory prayers? He said, Prayer in the depths of the night. [Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Nasa'i, Ibn Majah]
Why do we need to pray tahajjud?
Getting up leaving the warm and cozy bed is not easy. But people are doing it for Allah, to show their own self how much the dependency for Allah. They have the feeling of need to do so, whether in the state of hardship of life, or to stand in front of Him, praising Him with gratitude for everything He bestowed upon them.
Therefore, before we can set our body to wake up in the night, we need to create the sense of needing Allah. We must realize that as human, with lots of need and wants, we are powerless. Everything that we have now, is also given by Allah, and He could take it back ANYTIME. Therefore, it is one key of happiness in life to live in gratitude. We know that what we have is given by Allah, and we have other things that occupy our wanted-list. Therefore, we should really badly feel that we need Allah to grant it for us. For example:
-to be succeed in big examination
-to have righteous spouse and children
-to be able to lead the people/ to get strength in something that is really hard
-and so on.
How to wake up for tahajjud????
- Make yourself pray early for obligatory prayers and plus dhuha prayer. How can you wake up when you are terribly sleepy, when during the morning, you can't get yourself to pray on time while you are awake?
- Take care of yourself while you are awake, from sin, great or small. Because the thing that always prevent you from night prayer is the sin you do during the day.
-Avoid eating too much.
-Forgive others before you go to sleep.
-Sleep early, set the alarm.
-However, doesn't matter with the time. As long as you wake up anytime, that could be the time that Allah is wakening you up, and the du's at that time is granted for you. If you are trying hard to wake up, keep your mouth moving by saying "la haula wala quwwata illa billah". (there is no strength except the strength by Allah). Or subhanallah walhamdulillah walaa ila hailla allah allahuakbar, la haula wala quwwata illa billah.
-have a thought that, if you are able to wake up, this is a gift from Allah because He wanted to listen to your cry and problems.
-Once you are able to wake up, don't overdo yourself. This is to prevent yourself from getting tired and decide to leave one night from the night prayer.Just do the prayer that you are able to do (quality, not quantity), read some verses of Al Quran and take lessons from it, make du'as.. and if you still have a long time before fajr, you can go to sleep.
Im so sorry as this is just based on what I am doing, my experience and due to lack of time, I could not find the reference from the Quran or hadith for the tips. But I think, every person has their own experience and way to wake up for night prayer.
May this entry benefit myself and yours. May Allah guide us through the way :)
Jazakumullahu khair......
